These ambitious initiatives seek to change how medicine is practised – bringing the skills of our scientists in discovering new mechanisms of disease together with clinical collaboration to put this new knowledge to work.

Surfing the wave
“Will I still be able to surf big waves?” That was what first went through Anders’ head when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 29.
“I’d lost about 10 kilos in six weeks,” he explains. “I thought there would be a simple explanation and I wasn’t that concerned, but my girlfriend encouraged me to see a doctor.”
The diagnosis led Anders to become one of 90 participants in an SVI-led national clinical trial, for a drug our scientists believe will slow the progression of type 1 diabetes.
Anders believes new treatments will be found – and applauds the expertise and determination of SVI’s scientists.
“You never know when a trial like this is going to lead to a huge breakthrough. I’m proud to be part of it.”
