Our team of around 250 staff and students work collaboratively to tackle critical health challenges, including cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, infectious disease and dementia.
We celebrate fundamental biological discovery and practical application alike because both are required to improve disease treatment, diagnosis and prevention. There are no breakthroughs, no new wonder drugs, no big leaps forward without new understanding.
SVI is located on the campus of St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, is affiliated with the University of Melbourne, and operates proudly in one of the world’s most dynamic biomedical hubs.
Our mission is world-class science: inspired by discovery, driven by purpose.
Our vision is to make medical discoveries that transform lives.
Our values
Integrity
We make the active choice to conduct ourselves with honesty, transparency, fairness, and respect.
Open-mindedness
We look for solutions beyond the expected; we welcome new ideas and fresh perspectives.
Dedication
We are committed to our task, and the time, effort and sacrifice required to succeed.
Excellence
We do world-leading science, and we expect nothing less than the very highest standards.
Our history
Our story began in 1951 with a bequest from Jack Holt. Since then we have become a leading research institution at the forefront of improving the health and life-expectancy of Australians.
